Catalan Government releases Linkat 1.0

After many months of a public beta process the Department of Education and Universities of the Catalan Government has finally released the GNU/Linux distribution Linkat 1.0, following the steps of similar efforts near us like Linex in Extremadura or Lliurex in Valencia.

Linkat is available in DVD, CD-ROM and in liveCD formats and it is focused on education. It can be downloaded from their site. If you are involved in education you can request a copy and they will send it to you for free.

Linkat is based on OpenSuse 9.0 (a 2.0 version based on OpenSuse 10.1 is coming at the end of this year) and it has been started to be distributed to all the public schools in Catalonia, that have a total amount of 120.000 PC. During the public beta process it was deployed in 20 schools around Catalonia and now it is getting deployed in more centers.

When producing Linkat the Catalan government has translated Yast into Catalan, has selected a group of educational applications that are included in the distribution and also has created a quick installation and user manuals. The default desktop in the LiveCD and installable versions is GNOME. All the manuals and software included are in Catalan.

Toni Hermoso, the person behind the Catalan versions, has just posted  (in Catalan) an article reviewing LinkAt 1.0. I have also just seen that there is already an entry for Linkat in Wikipedia.
